Proclamation

WHEREAS, the golf industry is represented in every county of North Carolina through the state’s more than 556 courses; a 2013 economic impact study of golf by SRI International found that, in 2011, the golf economy in North Carolina generated direct spending of $2.3 billion dollars, leading to a total economic impact of $4.2 billion dollars through direct, indirect and induced spending; and

WHEREAS, in 2011,  the North Carolina golf industry provided jobs for nearly 53,000 North Carolinians and generated total wage income of $1.3 billion dollars; and

WHEREAS, the international golfing world will focus on Pinehurst in 2014 when, for the first time in history, the U.S. Open Championship and U.S. Women’s Open Championship will be played in consecutive weeks on the famed Pinehurst No. 2; and

WHEREAS, these championships will attract some 40,000 visitors, lending further luster and prestige to the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area’s revered status as The Home of American Golf; and

WHEREAS, this year, tens of thousands of other visitors will attend PGA Tour, PGA Champions Tour and PGA Web.com Tour events in centers such as Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Cary, Hickory and Davidson; and

WHEREAS, through those events and countless smaller tournaments across the state, golf contributed close to $146 million to charitable interests in 2011; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to have been the home of golfing greats, including Arnold Palmer and Davis Love; and

WHEREAS, golf courses and golfing provide a focus for healthful social and family activity, as well as, habitat for a broad range of wildlife, often in heavily urbanized areas; and

WHEREAS, golf is among the cleanest, greenest and most sustainable industries in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, golf is economically vital, environmentally responsible and socially beneficial to the people and the State of North Carolina;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 8, 2013, as “GOLF DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens in appreciation of the golf industry’s contribution to our state;

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this third day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand and thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.
