Governor Cooper Requests Federal Disaster Declaration

Yesterday, Governor Roy Cooper sent a letter to President Donald Trump requesting a federal disaster declaration for Guilford and Rockingham counties to help recover from the tornado that left a path of damage through the two counties on April 15. If granted, the federal individual assistance disaster declaration would provide loans or grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help homeowners, renters and business owners replace essential belongings and repair property.  

State Assistance Will Help Towns Recover Storm Cleanup Costs

Governor Roy Cooper today issued a state public assistance disaster declaration for the town of Tryon in Polk County and the Village of Cedar Rock in Caldwell County to help these local governments recover costs spent cleaning up from fall storms. Both communities were hit by tornadoes that formed from the remnants of Tropical Storm Nate in October 2017.

Today, Hometown Strong announced six initial partnerships with counties across North Carolina. Initial partnerships announced today include Burke, Edgecombe, Lenoir, Madison, Pasquotank, and Robeson Counties.

Ahead of the release of his short session budget, Governor Roy Cooper today shared his recommendations and requests to improve school safety and youth mental health. The Governor’s budget will recommend $130 million to protect students and prevent school violence. Cooper announced his school safety package at Cedar Ridge High School in Hillsborough where he was joined by educators, school support personnel and law enforcement.
