WHEREAS, Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, debilitating, non-contagious, inflammatory skin condition for which there is no known cure; and
WHEREAS, HS causes open wounds that do not readily heal and may lead to significant scarring, disfigurement, reduced range of motion, and chronic pain; and
WHEREAS, when all stages of the disease are considered, it is estimated that between 1 and 4 percent of the world’s population is affected by HS; and
WHEREAS, patients experience an average delay of seven years for a proper diagnosis and often endure a severely diminished quality of life; and
WHEREAS, understanding and compassion for those with HS from family, friends, medical providers, and the public at large is vital; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is home to two medical facilities with HS clinics and physicians who are recognized specialists in HS: University of North Carolina Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center in Chapel Hill and Duke Dermatology Clinic in Durham; and
WHEREAS, the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation is an organization which promotes research, patient care, and physician education for HS; and
WHEREAS, Hope For HS is a support group for patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa, their loved ones, and caregivers that provides advocacy and community for people in North Carolina affected by this condition; and
WHEREAS, Hidradenitis Suppurativa Awareness Week aims to increase awareness, correct misconceptions, promote education, recognize the struggles of those affected, and shorten the delay in HS diagnosis;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 7 – 12, 2021, as “HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA AWARENESS WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
