WHEREAS, this year marks the 250th Anniversary of Friedberg Moravian Church, celebrating generations of God’s goodness, faithfulness, and love; and

WHEREAS, in 1754, Adam and Maria Spach relocated to Davidson County, North Carolina from Maryland, bringing a passionate devotion nurtured through their prior association with the Moravian Church; and

WHEREAS, the Spach family and their neighbors established a new community near the south fork of Muddy Creek and requested that Moravian worship services be held there; and

WHEREAS, on November 24, 1759, Ludolph Gottlieb Bachhof held the first public Moravian service in Spach’s home; in 1770, a Moravian Society was organized and Bachhof became its first minister; and

WHEREAS, the name Friedberg means Hill of Peace and was approved by the congregation in 1771; the congregation was officially recognized by the World Wide Unity of the Brethren on April 4, 1773; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to recognize this important milestone for Friedberg Moravian Church and commends the congregation and church leaders for their continued dedication to their faith and their community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 7, 2023, as the “250th ANNIVERSARY OF FRIEDBERG MORAVIAN CHURCH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
