WHEREAS, a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a birth defect that occurs during fetal development and results in a hole formed in an infant’s diaphragm that allows organs to migrate through the hole and crowd the chest cavity, which can ultimately prevent lung growth; and
WHEREAS, approximately 1 in every 3,600 babies is born with a CDH in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and
WHEREAS, about half of all newborns who have diaphragmatic hernia also have other conditions, including birth defects of the brain, heart, and intestines; and
WHEREAS, those with CDH often endure multiple surgeries and possible medical complications which include pulmonary complications, gastric and intestinal problems, developmental delays, and may require respiratory and medicinal support for years; and
WHEREAS, raising awareness of this congenital defect can help increase acceptance and support for those suffering with CDH and their families, and bring attention to the urgent need for research and medical advances to prevent and treat this birth defect;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April, 2023, as “CONGENITIAL DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
