WHEREAS, September 17-23, 2021, marks the two hundred and thirty-fourth anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and
WHEREAS, the Constitution of the United States of America is the oldest document still in active use that outlines the self-government of a people; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to officially recognize this magnificent document and the anniversary of its adoption by the American Congress of the Confederation on September 17, 1787; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina was one of the thirteen original colonies of this great nation represented by three signers of the Constitution: William Blount, Richard Dobbs Spaight, and Hugh Williamson; and
WHEREAS, Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages people to reaffirm the ideas of the 1787 Framers of the Constitution by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, and continuing to work to make the United States a more perfect union;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 17-23, 2021, as “CONSTITUTION WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
