WHEREAS, economics is the study of making sound decisions in managing scarce resources and understanding the costs and consequences of such decisions, which is an essential skill for all North Carolinians; and
WHEREAS, the aim of economic education is to equip students with knowledge, skills, and tools for their roles as involved members of society and informed, lifelong decision-makers in a global economy; and
WHEREAS, our democracy depends on active and engaged citizens with economic skills and literacy that equips them to evaluate and engage in critical issues of public policy; and
WHEREAS, economic education is a required part of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for our K-12 schools, and it is important that our educators are equipped with high-quality professional development and resources that ensure students have access to a curriculum that develops their critical decision-making skills necessary for making informed choices; and
WHEREAS, increasing economic, entrepreneurial, and financial literacy in North Carolina is important in creating a more prosperous future for all North Carolinians;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October, 2023, as “ECONOMIC EDUCATION MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
