WHEREAS, Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and the most commonly known single gene cause of autism spectrum disorder; and
WHEREAS, FXS affects people regardless of gender, and can cause significant difficulties in learning, behavior, socialization, communication, and physical coordination; and
WHEREAS, those living with FXS deserve to have their voices heard, and we must continue to strive to ensure that their rights are preserved; and
WHEREAS, it is important to continue efforts to create a society in which everyone is valued and accepted for who they are; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the impact of Fragile X syndrome, and honors those living with and those impacted by this condition;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim July 22, 2023, as “FRAGILE X SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
