WHEREAS, acknowledging people with specific learning disabilities helps to focus on their strengths which benefits the community of North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, one in five individuals may have a specific learning disability; and

WHEREAS, specific learning disabilities are conditions that result in learning challenges  in particular skill areas, such as reading, writing, or math; and

WHEREAS, specific learning disabilities may include dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other processing disorders; and

WHEREAS, individuals with specific learning disabilities may receive, store, process, retrieve, or communicate certain information differently; and

WHEREAS, early identification and specialized instruction is key in helping individuals learn strategies and overcome their limitations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October, 2023, as “LEARNING DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
