WHEREAS, the multifaceted art form of clog dancing is a presentation of the cultural heritage of our nation, reflecting a mixture of European, Native American, and African cultures into an illustration of the American spirit; and
WHEREAS, clog dancing in all its forms, including flatfooting, buck dancing, jig dancing, step dancing, square dancing, and powertap, has had an historic and continuing influence on the social culture of our nation; and
WHEREAS, this influence extends to school activities, 4-H programs, performance opportunities, and competitive opportunities, and has opened many doors for international travel to many folk festivals around the world; and
WHEREAS, for centuries, clogging has influenced American entertainment, from the front porches of our hometown musicians to the stages of the Grand Ol’ Opry and Broadway, and has been included in numerous film projects; and
WHEREAS, clog dancing is rooted in diversity and inclusivity and is a joyful and inspirational outlet which provides a source of enjoyment, creativity, and self-expression for Americans as well as cloggers around the world on both the professional and amateur level; and
WHEREAS, August 8 is the anniversary of the passing of William “Bill” Nichols, who made an outstanding contribution to the art of clog dancing on both recreational and competitive platforms throughout its development; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to be home to many across our state who enjoy and find community through clogging;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 8, 2023, as “NATIONAL DAY OF CLOGGING” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
