WHEREAS, North Carolina proudly recognizes the contributions of volunteer mentors, who guide young people to success in their education, career, and well-being; and
WHEREAS, mentoring programs make our state and communities stronger by driving meaningful relationships that increase social capital for young people and provide invaluable support networks; and
WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, mentoring programs across the state stepped up to fill gaps for young people and families, connecting them with resources and services; and
WHEREAS, mentoring plays a pivotal role in career exploration and supports workforce development by helping young people set career goals, equipping mentors with the skills needed to support the professional growth of young people, and driving positive outcomes for communities across the state; and
WHEREAS, quality mentoring promotes healthy relationships and communication, positive self-esteem, emotional well-being, and relationship growth for young people; and
WHEREAS, National Mentoring Month is an opportunity to celebrate mentoring across our state, recruit caring adult mentors to provide identity-affirming relationships to young people, and elevate the work of mentoring organizations and volunteer mentors across North Carolina, who support young people by showing up for them every day and demonstrating their commitment to helping them thrive;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim January, 2024, as “NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
