WHEREAS, substance use disorders affect nearly 1,182,000 people in North Carolina, regardless of race, gender, age, or socioeconomic status; and
WHEREAS, substance use disorders are preventable and treatable conditions; recovery is a process that transforms individuals and the communities in which they live by creating hope, health, and a sense of purpose; and
WHEREAS, there are more than 4,000 certified peer support specialists in North Carolina that provide recovery services and support to individuals; and
WHEREAS, evidence-based treatment programs and support from friends, family, and the community contribute to the success of those with substance use disorders and enhance their overall physical and emotional well-being; and
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) collaborated with community partners, including individuals in recovery, to develop the North Carolina Opioid and Substance Use Action Plan to promote prevention, reduce harm, and connect North Carolinians to life-saving treatment programs and services in communities throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages all individuals to increase awareness and understanding of substance use disorders, and to show their respect and support for those in recovery, as well as those who have helped them obtain treatment, this month and throughout the year, thereby affirming the goal that all people with substance use disorders must have access to treatment services and recovery supports;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September, 2022, as “NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
