WHEREAS, the Children’s Tumor Foundation has designated May 17, 2023, as Neurofibromatosis (NF) Awareness Day to educate the public about this rare genetic disorder; and
WHEREAS, although over 2.5 million people around the world are living with NF, and 1 in every 3,000 births is diagnosed with NF, it is still relatively unknown to the public; and
WHEREAS, NF is a term for three genetic disorders: NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis; and
WHEREAS, NF causes tumors to grow in the nervous system throughout the body and can affect development of the brain, cardiovascular system, bones, and skin; and
WHEREAS, NF can lead to blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina commends the Children’s Tumor Foundation, and other concerned organizations and individuals, for promoting medical research aimed at finding effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for NF;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 17, 2023, as “NEUROFIBROMATOSIS AWARENESS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
