WHEREAS, archival institutions are instrumental in collecting, organizing, and preserving historical materials that document the history and culture of the state of North Carolina and its people; and
WHEREAS, archival institutions provide information about and access to these materials so that people can readily study or research the significant moments and figures of North Carolina’s past; and
WHEREAS, archival institutions manage records that possess legal, administrative, fiscal, and historic value; and
WHEREAS, historical information is crucial to understanding the past and to providing guidance for the future; and
WHEREAS, archival institutions assist the people of the state of North Carolina in preserving the resources that document their everyday lives and activities; and
WHEREAS, there are numerous county, municipal, academic, and historical organizations throughout the state of North Carolina that collect and preserve historical material; and
WHEREAS, the State Archives and the State Records Center of North Carolina, established in 1903, and other archive repositories in the state see the proclamation of North Carolina Archives Month as a means of promoting the appreciation and preservation of historical material within the state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October, 2022, as “NORTH CAROLINA ARCHIVES MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
