WHEREAS, NC MedAssist is the only statewide charitable pharmacy in North Carolina providing prescription and over-the-counter medications to our neighbors in need at no cost; and
WHEREAS, NC MedAssist began in 1997, as MedAssist of Mecklenburg, with the mission to serve low-income, uninsured, senior adults in Mecklenburg County with prescription medication coverage; and
WHEREAS, through the efforts of the Mecklenburg Medical Society Alliance, and with the assistance of a $55,000 grant from the employees of Presbyterian Hospital, NC MedAssist was able to fulfill their mission; and
WHEREAS, in 2009, Attorney General Roy Cooper launched the free central-fill pharmacy program, allowing MedAssist to expand the Free Prescription Pharmacy Program to the entire state of North Carolina and change their name to NC MedAssist; and
WHEREAS, this statewide program is the answer for those that have low income, have no prescription insurance, and are without the means to obtain life-saving medications to treat chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and asthma; and
WHEREAS, in 2021, NC MedAssist served 69,095 of our neighbors in need through our various programs, dispensing over $65 million in prescription and over-the-counter medications; and
WHEREAS, NC MedAssist continues its mission to dispense opportunities through improved health to all residents of North Carolina;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 15 – 19, 2022, as “NORTH CAROLINA MEDASSIST DISPENSING HOPE WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
