WHEREAS, the North Carolina Central University Women's Tennis Team has contributed greatly to our state’s reputation of excellence in collegiate sports; and

WHEREAS, the HBCU National Tennis Championship tournament was held in Atlanta, Georgia, at the South Fulton Tennis Center with 20 collegiate institutions, over 30 men's and women's tennis programs, and more than 250 players competing in both singles and doubles events; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina Central University remains a leading institution of higher education dedicated to excellence in the classroom, community, and athletic competition; and

WHEREAS, the Eagles, coached by Sofia Rachi and Gabriel Cucalon, exhibited extraordinary leadership and commitment to success; and

WHEREAS, we congratulate players Kennedy Hill (Captain), Alejandra Hidalgo Vega, Jade Houston, Candice Bernier, Isabelle Exsted, Lafi Joao, Patricia Palencia, and Maria Picazo Martin for their extraordinary effort and determination throughout the tournament and commend them on a job well done; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to congratulate the illustrious North Carolina Central University Eagles and their victory as the 2023 HBCU National Tennis Champions;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 21, 2023, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF THE NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
