WHEREAS, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, was founded in 1892, and joined the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) in 1945; and
WHEREAS, the Winston-Salem State University Men’s Basketball team have proven themselves to be the best team in the CIAA by winning the annual tournament, defeating the Lincoln University Men’s Basketball team on February 25, 2023; and
WHEREAS, this is the 13th championship in the great history of the Winston-Salem State University basketball program, including two championships secured under the stewardship of Head Coach Cleo Hill; and
WHEREAS, this win gives the Winston-Salem State University Basketball team an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament known as March Madness; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to recognize the Winston-Salem State University Rams and their extraordinary basketball team for this accomplishment;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim March 10, 2023, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
