WHEREAS, North Carolina has 170 senior centers in 95 counties serving as focal points for the provision and coordination of a broad spectrum of services and activities for older adults; and

WHEREAS, the theme of this year's observance, 'Discover Yours,' encourages older adults to visit a nearby center to see how centers have evolved to become the local, trusted place in their community that connects people to the programs, services, and opportunities they need to age well; and

WHEREAS, through their wide array of services, programs, and activities, senior centers empower our older adults to contribute to their own health and well-being, as well as the health and well-being of their fellow residents of all ages; and

WHEREAS, senior centers in North Carolina affirm the dignity, self-worth, and independence of older people by facilitating their decisions and actions; tapping their experiences, skills and knowledge, and enabling their continued contributions to the community; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the tremendous contributions that senior centers make towards our communities and the outstanding effort of the staff and volunteers who work every day to enhance the well-being of the older members of our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September, 2023, as “SENIOR CENTER MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
