WHEREAS, on October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the United States Navy to aid in the Revolutionary War; and
WHEREAS, for 246 years, the United States Navy has answered the call of duty to protect this nation both in times of war and peace; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is proud to be home to more than 5,000 active-duty and reserve Sailors, and their families, primarily located at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune; and
WHEREAS, the unofficial mottos of “Semper Fortis” and “Non sibi sed patriae” represent the longstanding tradition of our nation’s sailors to put service before self; and
WHEREAS, the United States Navy continues to play a significant and integral role in the wealth and prosperity of our State while defending our nation; and
WHEREAS, in commemoration of the 246th anniversary of the establishment of the United States Navy, North Carolinians will proudly recognize the sailors and Marines who have served our country;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 13, 2021, as “UNITED STATES NAVY BIRTHDAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
