It has been 37 days since Governor Roy Cooper shared a balanced compromise budget offer with Republican legislators. And for 37 days, Republican leaders have continued in vain to override the Governor’s veto.
Where is the Republican counteroffer and when will they stop playing games with the calendar?
By keeping the legislature in session for little reason other than to continue their override games, Republican leaders are wasting taxpayer money instead of coming to the table to negotiate with Governor Cooper and Democrats. From the Winston-Salem Journal:
At an estimated daily operational cost of $42,000 to run the legislature, there has been at least $924,000 of taxpayer funds spent since the first House session vote on the bills could have been taken July 8.
On Monday and Tuesday, the House floor session lasted less than 25 minutes each, and just one bill was addressed each time.
Only one House committee — Health — took up a bill Tuesday. There are no House committees set to meet today.
Governor Cooper’s compromise offer can be found HERE. It would close the health care coverage gap, raise teacher pay, cut taxes for people and guarantee school construction while balancing the budget and saving money in the Rainy Day Fund.
