In his budget proposal, Common Ground Solutions for North Carolina, Governor Cooper proposed giving teachers a direct annual stipend of $150 to offset out-of-pocket expenses for classroom supplies.
 
Statewide, teachers would receive almost $13 million in total for classroom supplies, according to new district-by-district analysis released today.
 
“Teachers are dipping into their own pockets and asking parents to help cover the rising cost of basic classroom supplies,” said Governor Cooper. “While this annual stipend wouldn’t cover everything, it would provide some relief to teachers as a recognition of what they are doing for our students, and I urge the General Assembly to pass a budget that includes a $150 supply stipend for teachers.”
 
Governor Cooper’s budget, which doesn’t raise taxes or fees, raises teacher pay by an average 10% over the next two years. At that pace, North Carolina would reach the best in the Southeast in 3 years and the national average in 5 years.
