Gov. Cooper and Leaders from His Administration to Meet in New Bern Tuesday Meeting, Tour to Focus on Eastern NC Issues, Including Hurricane Recovery

Governor Roy Cooper and leaders from his administration will be in New Bern Tuesday to discuss issues facing Eastern North Carolina and will take part in events across the region. 

On Tuesday, January 22 at 1:00 p.m., Gov. Cooper, representatives from cabinet agencies, and senior staff will meet at the North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace in New Bern to discuss issues facing the region, including hurricane recovery, economic development, public safety, and health care. The meeting will be open to the press. 

Before and after the meeting, Gov. Cooper and cabinet secretaries will participate in events across the region including in Craven, Lenoir, Jones, Pitt, Pamlico, and Greene counties.

On Tuesday at 9:20 a.m., Gov. Cooper will visit Pamlico County Primary School in Bayboro. At 10:25 a.m., he will volunteer at the Religious Community Services soup kitchen in New Bern. At 3:00 p.m., the governor will visit a home damaged in Hurricane Florence and under repair through the STEP Program.

Cabinet secretaries and other administration leaders plan to participate in the following events across Eastern North Carolina. All events are open to the press unless noted otherwise.

•    Department of Administration Secretary Machelle Sanders on Tuesday will visit Promise Place in New Bern, a nonprofit supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, to discuss their role in Hurricane Florence community recovery.  
•    Department of Commerce Secretary Anthony M. Copeland will visit BSH, a home appliances manufacturer in Craven County, to meet with executives and learn more about the apprenticeship program, also on Tuesday. 
•    Environmental Quality Secretary Michael Regan will sit down with both public and private sector leaders in the Kinston area on Tuesday morning to discuss strategies for rebuilding in environmentally sustainable ways after Hurricane Florence. The visit will include a roundtable at the Neuse Regional Water & Sewer Authority to discuss water infrastructure and resiliency. After, Secretary Regan will visit Pollocksville to tour the wastewater treatment facility which was devastated by Hurricane Florence.  
•    Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy Cohen will visit the Caswell Developmental Center in Kinston to meet with staff and members of the Caswell Booster Club who volunteered with Hurricane Florence recovery, on Tuesday.  
•    Military and Veterans Affairs Secretary Larry Hall will hold a Veteran Service Organization Roundtable on Tuesday in Trenton to discuss support systems for North Carolina veterans.  
•    Natural and Cultural Resources Secretary Susi Hamilton will visit Tryon Palace for a hurricane damage restoration event on Tuesday. 
•    Also on Tuesday, Public Safety Secretary Erik. A. Hooks will visit a North Carolina National Guard duty station in Pitt County, and the Lenoir Youth Development Center in Kinston. Secretary Hooks also plans to visit a Craven County home damaged in Hurricane Florence and under repair through the STEP Program. 
•    On Monday, Revenue Secretary Ronald Penny will speak at Greene County’s NAACP Martin Luther King, Jr. Event at St. Peter Freewill Baptist Church in Snow Hill.  
•    Department of Transportation Secretary Jim Trogdon will tour the U.S. 70/Slocum Road interchange under construction at Marine Corp Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock. The new interchange will provide easier and safer access to Cherry Point through Slocum Gate. After, Sec. Trogdon will visit the Fleet Readiness Center-East, a Naval aircraft maintenance facility in Havelock. He will also provide an update on other area transportation projects. 
•    State Human Resources Director Barbara Gibson will visit Early College EAST High School in Havelock at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Through smaller class sizes, STEM-focused instruction and partnerships with Craven Community College, NC State University and Marine Corp Air Station Cherry Point, students gain career exposure, hands-on work experience and up to two years of college credit. 
•    Secretary and State Chief Information Officer Eric Boyette of the Department of Information Technology will volunteer on hurricane recovery efforts with the Fuller Center on Tuesday afternoon in New Bern.
