Today, Gov. Roy Cooper announced three new appointments to judicial and district attorney positions.
“These North Carolinians bring years of courtroom experience to their appointments,” Gov. Cooper said. “Their commitment to justice and public service make them valuable additions to our legal system.”
Gov. Cooper has appointed Lamont Wiggins as a Superior Court Judge in District 7B, serving Edgecombe and Wilson counties. He replaces Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Milton F. “Toby” Fitch, Jr., who retired in February.
A life-long resident of Rocky Mount, Wiggins has worked as an attorney in private practice for 24 years. He previously served on the Rocky Mount City Council as a member and as Mayor Pro Tempore and has also served on the Nash/Edgecombe Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Wiggins holds degrees from North Carolina State University and North Carolina Central University School of Law.
Gov. Cooper appointed Mario Perez as a District Court Judge in District 3A, serving Pitt County. He replaces Chief District Court Judge P. Gwynett Hilburn, who retired earlier this year.
Perez has worked as an attorney for more than 30 years. He has belonged to the North Carolina Bar Association, North Carolina Advocates for Justice and the American Bar Association. He also serves as an arbitrator in Pitt County District Court. Perez holds degrees from St. Mary’s University and Georgetown University School of Law.
Gov. Cooper appointed Jason Ramey as Rockingham County District Attorney. He replaces Tom Keith.
“I appreciate Tom Keith stepping in to provide stability during a time of uncertainty for the community, and I am confident that the new DA will bring steady, capable leadership to the office,” Gov. Cooper said.
Ramey currently works as an Assistant District Attorney for District 17A, prosecuting cases in juvenile, district, and superior courts. He previously served as an Assistant District Attorney in District 20A and as vice president of the Rockingham County Bar Association. Ramey holds degrees from Pensacola Christian College and Wake Forest University School of Law.
