A new program will help North Carolina public school teachers get the training and experience they need to provide more opportunities for their students to learn about promising careers.

Today, Governor Roy Cooper delivered supplies collected from the Governor’s 2nd Annual School Supply Drive to Hidden Valley Elementary School in Charlotte. Supplies are being delivered to schools across the state as part of the annual drive.

Governor Roy Cooper issued an executive order today directing North Carolina to create an Early Childhood Action Plan. The plan to be developed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will be devoted to the health, safety, and developmental and academic readiness of young children across the state.

In response to a General Assembly-mandated $5.1 million budget cut for the 2018-19 fiscal year, the Department of Public Instruction in June announced that it was eliminating 61 positions, including 29 positions focused on turning around our state’s lowest performing schools and districts.

Today, Governor Cooper announced the Finish Line Grants program to help community college students who face unforeseen financial emergencies complete their training. The program will leverage up to $7 million in federal funds to help students pay for course materials, housing, medical needs, dependent care, or other financial emergencies that students may face through no fault of their own.

Today, Governor Cooper was joined by teachers and other public school personnel to speak about his veto of the budget crafted in secret and passed last week by legislative Republicans.

Governor Cooper today presented his Common Ground Solutions 2018-2019 recommended budget adjustments. The Governor’s plan prioritizes safer and stronger public schools, provides more workforce training for high-paying jobs, and protects the health of families across North Carolina – all without raising taxes.

Governor Roy Cooper has proclaimed May 7-11, 2018 as National Teacher Appreciation Week in North Carolina. In addition, Gov. Cooper also proclaimed May 8, 2018 as National Teacher Appreciation Day in North Carolina.

To help ensure every North Carolina student has access to the skills and training they need to be ready for college and career, Governor Cooper today announced that he is joining the Governors’ Partnership for K-12 Computer Science.
