Joined by North Carolina teachers and citing concerns that the conference budget passed by the legislature shortchanges North Carolina’s public schools and economy, Governor Cooper announced today that he will veto the budget.

Today, Governor Cooper signed HB 13 in order to keep educators in classrooms and prevent budget crises in schools across North Carolina. The governor offered the following statement:

In his budget to the legislature, set to be presented tomorrow, Governor Roy Cooper will announce an ambitious and forward-thinking education plan to make North Carolina a “Top 10 Educated State” by 2025.

Governor Cooper released a new video today on his multi-year plan to raise teacher salaries to first in the Southeast in three years and at least the national average in five years. The Governor’s plan includes an average 5% raise this year and another average 5% the next year. This is the largest two-year investment in North Carolina teacher salaries in the last decade.

After proclaiming May 8-12 Teacher Appreciation Week, Governor Cooper is calling on the legislature to support his budget’s funding for school support personnel.

In his budget proposal, Common Ground Solutions for North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper proposed creating the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit to help middle class families afford high-quality child care.

Governor Cooper has nominated members to the State Board of Education. "Decisions made by the State Board of Education impact schools, students, teachers and families across North Carolina," Gov. Cooper said. "I'm pleased to nominate as members dedicated, experienced education leaders who know how critical quality public schools are to our state's future."

In his budget proposal, Common Ground Solutions for North Carolina, Governor Cooper proposed adding $15 million to the Smart Start program, a public private partnership focused on early childhood health and education.

Governor Roy Cooper today announced three appointments to the Education Commission of the States.

Governor Roy Cooper today highlighted his proposed NC GROW (Getting Ready for Opportunities in the Workforce) Scholarship to help make North Carolina a Top 10 Educated state by 2025. Starting next year, good students who graduated high school with a 2.0 GPA or higher would get free tuition to any NC community college through the NC GROW scholarship.
