WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on January 9, 1914 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown; and
WHEREAS, these great men aimed to steer African American college fraternities back towards their original purpose, seeking to establish a new organization based on the principles of brotherhood, scholarship, and service; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is home to a variety of collegiate and graduate chapters of Phi Beta Sigma, including the Delta Zeta Sigma Chapter in Durham; and
WHEREAS, the Delta Zeta Sigma Chapter was chartered in Durham on January 4, 1961; since then, the chapter and its members have promoted the fraternity’s motto of Culture For Service and Service for Humanity through scholarships, providing resources to community residents, sponsoring cultural programing, supporting philanthropic efforts, and hosting events supporting minority businesses in Durham County; and
WHEREAS, the chapter has contributed greatly to the City of Durham, taking part in a number of charitable activities over the years, including sponsoring families for Thanksgiving dinners; supporting Angel Tree giving during Christmas; providing college scholarships; volunteering at Habitat For Humanity; assisting at food drives, blood drives, voter registration, and education events; contributing to Adopt-A-School initiatives; and fostering young minds through their youth mentoring group, the Sigma Beta Club; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina joins the Delta Zeta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated in commending their members around the world for helping communities excel by being a Brotherhood of Conscious Men Actively Serving Our Communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim January 9, 2021, in recognition of the “107th ANNIVERSARY OF PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY, INCORPORATED” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
