WHEREAS, Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a genetic disorder caused by a partial deletion of chromosome 4, also known as 4p-; major symptoms may include extremely wide-set eyes with a broad nose, a small head, low-set malformed ears, heart (cardiac) defects, and other physical disabilities; and

WHEREAS, children with 4p- syndrome are usually born with low birth weight and develop slowly, both cognitively and physically, compared to their same-age peers, and experience medical complications; and

WHEREAS, the prevalence of WHS is estimated to be 1 in 50,000 births; however, this may be an underestimate because it is likely that some affected individuals are never diagnosed; and

WHEREAS, dedicated professionals are engaged in valuable research to explore new therapies and diagnostic tools, and to offer hope to persons with 4p- syndrome; and

WHEREAS, 4p-/Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Awareness Day was created to promote research, advocate for effective diagnostic screenings, and support the development of improved therapies for early intervention and other critical treatments for people with 4p- syndrome; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina commends the families, advocates, and caregivers of those with 4p- syndrome for their work in raising awareness of this disorder, and encourages people to support those living with 4p-/Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome in our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 16, 2021, as “4P-/WOLF-HIRSCHHORN SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
