WHEREAS, North Carolina is home to a vibrant and growing community of people of Guatemalan origin and ancestry; according to a 2017 study by the Pew Research Center, an increasing number of Guatemalan immigrants are choosing to call North Carolina home; and
WHEREAS, the Guatemalan community in North Carolina enriches our state’s daily cultural, economic, and civic life through a continuous infusion of art, tradition, and skills; and
WHEREAS, in Guatemala, November 1st is traditionally celebrated as All Saints Day, a cherished and important holiday to pay respects to the deceased; this day is characterized by lively exhibition, artistic expression, and amazing food; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina, in partnership with the Consulate General of Guatemala, will host the annual Day of Guatemala on All Saints Day; this year, in compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols, the North Carolina Museum of Art will be hosting a virtual event, which will include a program full of music, art, and celebration; and
WHEREAS, this important day will also mark the third anniversary of the inauguration of the Consulate General of Guatemala in Raleigh; the Consulate General is a valuable community resource that promotes greater understanding and partnership with the local Guatemalan community in our state; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is honored by our growing Guatemalan community, and encourages residents across our state to embrace the increasingly diverse cultures and people that have come to call North Carolina home;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 1, 2020, as “DAY OF GUATEMALA” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
