WHEREAS, Robert B. Jordan was a dedicated public servant who served in the North Carolina Senate from 1976 until 1984 and eventually as the 29th Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina from 1985 until 1989; and

WHEREAS, a native of Mt. Gilead in Montgomery County, Mr. Jordan was a successful local business leader who spent years running his family’s lumber company; and

WHEREAS, he served on the North Carolina State Board of Education, the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges, and the University of North Carolina Board of Governors; and

WHEREAS, Robert B. Jordan was a lifelong champion for education, from pre-school to graduate school, supporting programs that promoted excellence, accessibility, and equity; and

WHEREAS, he received a number of distinguished awards throughout his incredible career, including the Watauga Award from North Carolina State University and an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jordan has been posthumously selected as a 2020 Champion for Children by the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina honors the memory of Robert B. Jordan and upholds his decades-spanning legacy of outstanding public service to our state and to our residents;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2020, as a “A DAY IN RECOGNITION OF ROBERT B. JORDAN” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
