WHEREAS, Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue, the fibers that hold all the body’s cells, organs, and tissue together; and
WHEREAS, this disorder can affect almost any part of the body, and most commonly results in cardiovascular, eye, and skeletal complications; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that 1 in 5,000 individuals worldwide is born with Marfan syndrome, affecting people across the gender and racial spectrum; roughly 3 out of 4 individuals diagnosed with Marfan inherit the genetic mutation from a parent; and
WHEREAS, symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening, but in most cases, the disease tends to worsen with age; and
WHEREAS, all forms of Marfan syndrome are life-long, incurable, and potentially debilitating; due to the life-threatening nature of this disorder, timely diagnosis and treatment is essential; and
WHEREAS, Marfan syndrome is often misdiagnosed and may be an under-diagnosed condition; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina seeks to raise public awareness of Marfan syndrome in order to properly diagnose and treat individuals affected by this condition;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim February, 2021, as “MARFAN SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
