WHEREAS, for generations, North Carolinians have proudly served our nation during times of conflict and peace; and
WHEREAS, our brave service men and women, their families, and their loved ones have made great sacrifices to protect the freedoms we enjoy; and
WHEREAS, today North Carolina's military presence is the fifth largest in the nation, and has a total economic impact of $66 billion annually on our state;
WHEREAS, North Carolina is home to more than 100,000 active military personnel and their families, stationed at Fort Bragg Army Base, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Marine Corps Air Station New River, and the Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City; and
WHEREAS, our state’s active-duty military and more than 725,000 veterans impart courage, honor, and valor to their fellow North Carolinians; and
WHEREAS, these servicemembers and veterans are true leaders in our communities and are integral to the success, advancement, and prosperity of our state; and
WHEREAS, during Military Appreciation Month, we are reminded of the important role the United States Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country and state, and of our responsibility as Americans to support and honor the selfless service of our military families; and
WHEREAS, this month and throughout the year, we recognize our North Carolina servicemembers and veterans, and remember with deep gratitude the men and women who have given their lives in defense of our freedom;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May, 2021, as “MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
