WHEREAS, the theme for the 70th observance of the National Day of Prayer will be Lord, Pour Out Your Love, Life, and Liberty; and
WHEREAS, a National Day of Prayer has been part of our heritage since it was declared by the First Continental Congress in 1775; in 1952, the United States Congress approved a joint resolution setting aside a day each year to pray in our nation; and
WHEREAS, the United States Congress, by Public Law 100-307 (1988) mandates observance of the first Thursday of May annually as a National Day of Prayer; and
WHEREAS, the First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees and protects the freedom to exercise and practice religious beliefs, including prayer; the leaders and people of our nation are afforded the freedom and have relied on prayer during times of thanksgiving, times of sorrow, and times of uncertainty throughout our history; and
WHEREAS, North Carolinians of all faiths and backgrounds pray to express faith and beliefs; on this and all days, people will gather throughout our state in prayer with thankfulness while seeking guidance, provision, protection, and purpose for the benefit of every individual; and
WHEREAS, in observance of the National Day of Prayer, we especially pray for and remember those who risk their lives for our freedom, health, and well-being, and ask for peace throughout our world;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 6, 2021, as “NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
