WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina, is positioned as a global leader in sustainability working to reduce its impact on the planet; and
WHEREAS, forty percent of the food produced is never eaten in the United States, contributing to more than eight percent of the total global greenhouse gas emissions; and
WHEREAS, food waste is a vastly overlooked driver of climate change and reducing food waste is one of the most important things we can do to reverse global warming; and
WHEREAS, food waste represents one of the greatest possibilities for individuals, companies, and communities to contribute to reverse global warming, and at the same time feed more people, increase economic benefits, and preserve threatened eco-systems; and
WHEREAS, Stop Food Waste Day aims to educate people about their food waste and create impactful solutions to how people farm, produce, purchase, and use food; and
WHEREAS, creating awareness around the increasing epidemic is a key component in fighting food waste;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 28, 2021, as “STOP FOOD WASTE DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
