WHEREAS, tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder that causes non-malignant tumors to form in many different organs, primarily including the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin, and lungs; and

 

WHEREAS, an estimated 50,000 Americans and 1 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with TSC; and

 

WHEREAS, this disorder is the leading genetic cause of both epilepsy and autism; and

 

WHEREAS, TSC often goes undiagnosed as symptoms vary widely between individuals; and

 

WHEREAS, the incidence of TSC is as common as Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) or cystic fibrosis, so increased awareness is vital; and

 

WHEREAS, the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance and other groups around the world have joined to promote awareness of the disorder to ensure that people with TSC get the best possible treatment and proper diagnosis; and

 

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages residents to raise awareness in order to support the search for a cure and assist those individuals and families who deal with this challenging disease on a daily basis;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2021, as “TUBEROUS SCLEROSIS COMPLEX AWARENESS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
