WHEREAS, multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the brain and spinal cord where the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers, causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body; and

 

WHEREAS, MS can be potentially disabling, and signs and symptoms can vary widely depending on the amount of nerve damage and which nerves are affected; individuals with severe MS may lose the ability to walk independently or at all; may experience vision problems; and may experience fatigue, dizziness, slurred speech, and problems with sexual, bowel, and bladder function; and

 

WHEREAS, MS is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system, affecting an estimated 1 million people over the age of 18 in the United States; in the South alone, MS reportedly affects an estimated 277 out of every 100,000 residents; and

WHEREAS, there is no known cure for multiple sclerosis, through treatment can help speed recovery from attacks and manage symptoms; and

 

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the individuals, organizations, and healthcare professionals who have worked hard to raise awareness for this complex and often devastating disease, as well as improve the lives of those affected;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 30, 2021, as “WORLD MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
