2025
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has played a crucial role in supporting low- to moderate- income workers and families in North Carolina for 50 years and
Whereas, more than 800,000 North Carolinians claimed the EITC in Tax Year 2023, receiving an average credit of over $2,800 and boosting local economies with more than $2 billion in federal funds; and
Whereas, benefits for EITC recipients and their communities include reduced child poverty, higher educational achievement, greater lifetime earnings, and better health outcomes, including improved birth outcomes, food security, and child safety; and
Whereas, 1 out of every 5 eligible North Carolinians did not claim the EITC in recent tax years, leaving hundreds of millions of dollars on the table that would have boosted North Carolinian workers, children, and local economies; and
Whereas, Direct File is a new digital tool that will be available to approximately 1.67 million North Carolina taxpayers in 2025, providing an option for North Carolinians to file their federal tax returns directly with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for free; and
Whereas, Direct File helps put more money back in the pockets of North Carolina taxpayers, including by increasing their access to tax credits they have earned like the EITC;
Now, therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim January 31, 2025, as “EITC Awareness Day” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
Signed,
Josh Stein
Governor
