WHEREAS, on November 11th, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson formally declared the day as Armistice Day in order to reflect on and honor the sacrifices made by service members during World War I; and
WHEREAS, House Resolution 7786 formally renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day on June 1, 1954; and
WHEREAS, over 667,000 veterans of the United States Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard currently call North Carolina home; and
WHEREAS, many of these veterans served aboard such prestigious installations in the state of North Carolina such as Fort Bragg, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Camp Lejeune, Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, and more; and
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs provides active outreach to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the veterans service organizations, and the veterans community in our state to support and assist North Carolina's veterans in identifying and obtaining the services, assistance, and support to which they are entitled; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina seeks to continuously recognize the service and sacrifices made by our veterans and their family members; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages all citizens, businesses, organizations, and elected officials to continue to provide support for the veteran population within our great state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2021, as “VETERANS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
