WHEREAS, on October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the United States Navy to aid in the Revolutionary War; and

WHEREAS, for 247 years, the United States Navy has answered the call of duty to protect this nation both in times of war and peace; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina is proud to be home to more than 5,000 active-duty and reserve sailors and their families, primarily located at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune; and

WHEREAS, the unofficial mottos of “Semper Fortis” and “Non sibi sed patriae” represent the longstanding tradition of our nation’s sailors putting service before self; and

WHEREAS, the United States Navy continues to play a significant and integral role in the safety and security of our state while defending our nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 13, 2022, as “BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
