BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, on October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the United States Navy to aid in the Revolutionary War; and

WHEREAS, for 249 years, the United States Navy has answered the call of duty to protect this nation both in times of war and peace; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina is proud to be home to more than 5,000 active-duty and reserve Sailors, and their families, primarily located at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune; and

WHEREAS, the unofficial motto of "Semper Fortis" and "Non sibi sed patriae" represent the longstanding tradition of our nation's sailors to put service before self; and

WHEREAS, the United States Navy continues to play a significant and integral role in the security, wealth, and prosperity of our State while defending our nation; and

WHEREAS, in commemoration of the 249th anniversary of the establishment of the United States Navy, North Carolinians proudly recognize the Sailors who served and continue to serve our country;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 13, 2024, as “BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
