WHEREAS, licensed professional counselors in North Carolina assist individuals, groups, and families by evaluating and treating mental disorders and other conditions through a combination of clinical mental health and human development principles; and

WHEREAS, through treatment, counselors develop an understanding of personal problems, define goals, and plan action reflecting their clients’ interests, abilities, and mental health needs in relation to social concerns, educational progress, and professional development; and

WHEREAS, professional counselors can be found in a variety of settings, including primary and secondary schools, colleges, hospitals, mental health agencies, rehabilitation centers, private practice offices, and more; and

WHEREAS, professional counselors are crucial in our ongoing efforts to treat and understand mental health; their important work has supported many people through some of their most difficult times and saved countless lives; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes and commends the role that professional counselors play in making the residents of our state healthier and more capable of managing their mental health challenges;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April, 2023, as “COUNSELING AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
