CRI DU CHAT SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Cri du chat syndrome, also known as 5p- syndrome, is a chromosomal condition characterized by delayed development, including low birth weight, weak muscle tone, microcephaly, a high-pitched cry in infancy, an intellectual disability, and potential medical complications; and
WHEREAS, the term "5p" is used by geneticists to describe a portion of chromosome number five that is missing in these individuals; and
WHEREAS, each year in the United States, approximately 50 to 60 children are born with 5p- syndrome (five p minus), also known as cat cry syndrome, or Cri du chat syndrome; and
WHEREAS, children born with Cri du chat will most likely require ongoing support from a team of parents, therapists, and medical and educational professionals to help them achieve their maximum potential; and
WHEREAS, there are nearly two dozen families in North Carolina and over 1,000 across the United States living with Cri du chat syndrome; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages people to promote awareness, advocacy, and resources to support individuals with Cri du chat and their families in our communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 5, 2024, as “CRI DU CHAT SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
