WHEREAS, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, was founded in 1892, and joined the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) in 1945; and
WHEREAS, in 2019, the Winston-Salem State University women’s track team claimed the Outdoor CIAA Championship; and
WHEREAS, during the 2022 championship meet, the WSSU Rams defended their title with five students placing in first: DeMaya Campbell (javelin), Kennedy Alexander (high jump), Alyssa Farmer (discus), Tamia McLean (400), and Vanessa Jones (3000); and
WHEREAS, after all 16 events were scored, the Fayetteville State University Broncos and WSSU Rams were crowned co-champions after each finished with a total of 149.5 points; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is proud to recognize the Winston-Salem State University Rams and their extraordinary track and field team for this accomplishment;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2023, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF THE WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD TEAM” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
