WHEREAS, gastroparesis is a chronic digestive motility illness that affects more than five million people across the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, gastroparesis is a paralysis of the stomach which causes debilitating pain, nausea, vomiting, early satiety and can lead to serious complications such as malnourishment, dehydration, extreme weight changes and overwhelming fatigue; and

 

WHEREAS, there is no known cure, and few effective treatment options or medications are available for digestive motility disorders; and

 

WHEREAS, the severity of gastroparesis and digestive motility disorders require many people to depend on liquid diets, feeding tubes, and/or IV lines for daily nutrition and hydration; and

 

WHEREAS, Gastroparesis Awareness Month is an opportunity to promote research, improve medications and support additional treatment options to provide hope for those affected by this illness and their loved ones; and

 

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina supports increased public awareness of the devastating effects of gastroparesis to improve the lives of those living with this condition and contribute to the overall quality of public health;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August, 2021, as the “GASTROPARESIS AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
