WHEREAS, on June 23, 1936, the 74th U.S. Congress passed a joint congressional resolution that designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day; and
WHEREAS, each year on the last Sunday of September, Gold Star Mother’s Day honors the mothers, fathers, and families of fallen military service members; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of North Carolina take pride in recognizing the countless sacrifices made by our service members and their families; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is home to some of the finest military bases in the world, including Army Base Fort Bragg, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and the Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City; and
WHEREAS, we have a moral obligation to acknowledge the brave men and women who died protecting our freedom; and
WHEREAS, on September 26, 2021, citizens across the State of North Carolina reaffirm their commitment to Gold Star Mothers and their families, who carry on with pride and courage despite their loss;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 26, 2021, as “GOLD STAR MOTHER’S DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
