FOOD WASTE PREVENTION WEEK

2024

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, North Carolina prioritized addressing food waste by launching the Use the Food NC public information campaign and delivering technical assistance to food waste generators across the state; and

WHEREAS, all North Carolinians benefit from better utilizing food resources, and better utilization can save North Carolina households an average of $1,500 per year; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina K-12 schools and universities have a special role in educating the next generation to reduce, recover, and recycle food, and can receive assistance through the Every Tray Counts program; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina has the opportunity to save shared resources, such as land, water, and energy, used to produce and transport food that ultimately goes uneaten; and

WHEREAS, preventing food waste is an invaluable way people and businesses across North Carolina can reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and make the best use of food grown and manufactured for human consumption;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 1 – 7, 2024, as “FOOD WASTE PREVENTION WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
