HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Huntington’s Disease is an inherited, progressively degenerative neurological disease that causes total physical and mental deterioration over a 10 – 20 year period; and

WHEREAS, approximately 1,000 North Carolinians suffer from Huntington's Disease, and 5,500 individuals have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease from an affected parent; and

WHEREAS, there is currently no treatment to stop or slow the progression of Huntington's Disease, and symptoms usually present in adults ages 35 – 55, disrupting their ability to work and provide for their family; and

WHEREAS, Huntington's Disease organizations in North Carolina and nationwide work tirelessly to provide support, resources, awareness and research to create a world free of this horrific disease; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages all residents to know the importance of medical institutions and research teams in their efforts to serve patients and families with this devastating disease and to unravel the mysteries of treatment and an eventual cure;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May, 2024, as “HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
