International Compost Awareness Week

A Proclamation

Whereas, organic materials including yard trimmings and food scraps make up approximately 31 percent of the material going to landfills; and composting helps preserve North Carolina’s landfill capacity; and

Whereas, composting creates a valuable soil amendment that enriches soil, reduces water consumption, prevents erosion, and decreases the need of chemical fertilizers; and

Whereas, North Carolina’s residents, communities, local governments, state government, soil conservation service and extension offices, and others play a vital role in protecting clean water, preserving soil health, and diverting waste through composting; and

Whereas, organics make up more than half of the material recovered by North Carolina’s residential recycling programs; composting creates green jobs and strengthens sustainable infrastructure across North Carolina; and

Whereas, the Compost Research & Education Foundation has declared the first full week of May to be the annual International Compost Awareness Week; and

Whereas, International Compost Awareness Week is an awareness and education initiative to encourage compost production use; and

Whereas, 2025’s ICAW theme is Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost, an effort to highlight composting in all forms and scales – from backyard bins to community composters and to large-scale facilities as well as anyone who recognizes the many benefits of composting;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 4-10, 2025, as International Compost Awareness Weekin North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
