MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Mexico had been under Spanish rule for three centuries when, on September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rallied and united the people of Mexico towards independence; and

WHEREAS, each year, Mexicans throughout the world gather to celebrate and reflect upon the history and individuals that led to and shaped their nation’s independence; and

WHEREAS, each year, Mes Patrio, Mexico’s Independence Month, is celebrated throughout September, and Mexico’s Independence Day and freedom on September 16; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina is a culturally diverse state, and is proud to be home to many residents of Mexican heritage; among all North Carolina Hispanic or Latino residents, including those born in the United States, 54 percent identify Mexican as their primary ancestry; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina has been increasingly shaped by the economic, social, and cultural contributions of the Mexican community; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages residents across the state to join in celebrating the remarkable history and heritage of Mexican Independence, and wishes all who celebrate a happy Mes Patrio;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September, 2024, as “MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE MONTH” and September 16, 2024, as “MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
