M.O.M.S. TOUR DAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on August 3, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships will launch its Maternal Outcomes Matter Showers (M.O.M.S.) Tour in Charlotte; and
WHEREAS, this national tour aims to improve maternal health outcomes, particularly among African American and American Indian/Alaska Native women in communities with high maternal and morbidity rates; and
WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2020, over 800 women died in the U.S. from pregnancy-related causes; and
WHEREAS, according to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women, and American Indian/Alaska Native women are twice as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women; 80 percent of these deaths were determined to be preventable; and
WHEREAS, in North Carolina, between 2018 and 2019, 76 pregnancy-related deaths were reported, with nearly 85.5 percent of those deaths reported by the State as preventable; and
WHEREAS, recognizing the early warning signs, getting an accurate and timely diagnosis, and having access to quality care can save lives; and
WHEREAS, the M.O.M.S. Tour brings together mental health professionals, birth workers, community members, and other medical professionals to engage in meaningful discussions on maternal health disparities and explore ways to provide resources and support for women at risk; and
WHEREAS, in addition to baby resources, pregnant women and families will have access to local services, educational information, and essential health-related services such as healthcare coverage, mental health services, local support services offered by doulas and midwives, vaccination offerings, nutritious food, and more;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 3, 2024, as “M.O.M.S. TOUR DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
