NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORSHIP MONTH

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, a cancer survivor is defined as anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life; and
WHEREAS, according to North Carolina Central Cancer Registry data, the overall five-year relative survival rate for all cancers in North Carolinians from 2016 to 2020 was 65 percent, slightly higher than that for all cancers from 2015 to 2019, which was 64 percent; and
WHEREAS, cancer survivors and their families exhibit courage, faith, and strength to undergo the emotional, physical, and financial burdens associated with their disease; and
WHEREAS, the first Sunday in June is National Cancer Survivors Day; it is a day to celebrate those who have survived, to encourage those recently diagnosed, to gather families for support, and reach out to the community; and
WHEREAS, cancer survivors are encouraged to create a survivorship care plan to record their cancer and treatment history, health checkups or follow-up tests needed in the future, possible long-term effects of their treatments, as well as ideas for staying healthy; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages residents and health care providers to learn how they can support cancer survivors during all stages of cancer survivorship and offer care, support, and palliative services during their unexpected cancer journey;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June, 2024, as “NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORSHIP MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
